- Intrathoracic
- Pneumothorax (large)
- Unilateral bullous emphysema
- Pneumonectomy with compensatory hyperexpansion
- Airway obstruction (hilar mass, endobronchial lesion, foreign body) with air trapping
- Swyer-James syndrome
- Isolated unilateral absence of pulmonary artery (IUAPA)
- Extrathoracic
- Unilateral mastectomy
- Poland's syndrome (congenital absence of unilateral pectoralis muscle)
- Poor technique / patient positioning
Additional differential diagnosis considerations in the pediatric population:
- Aspirated foreign body with air trapping
- Congenital lobar emphysema
